Wondering if your kids should ride the bus to school and other activities? It’s a safe, reliable, and affordable mode of transportation for your child to get to and from school, extracurriculars, and other places around Greater Lafayette.
Taking the bus also helps children save time, get from A to B, and even learn the values of responsibility and reducing their carbon footprint. Here are five reasons why kids should ride CityBus!
When it comes to letting their kids ride the bus, one of the top misconceptions parents have is that it’s not safe. But according to the NHTSA, students are 70 times more likely to get to school (and around town) safely on a bus than by car. Our buses are specifically designed to be safer and more visible than passenger vehicles, with interior cameras, collision avoidance systems, and other extensive features to protect riders.
You can help your child learn how to ride the bus safely by following these tips:
You and your kiddo should also know the answers to these questions:
Parents aren’t there on the bus to help kids remember their water bottles, bags, lunch boxes, and coats. But this gives your child a great opportunity to become more responsible and learn how to take care of their belongings, making sure they have everything before they board and exit the bus.
And because our buses stick to a schedule, your child will learn how to develop a routine and manage their time so they can catch the bus when it arrives. Knowing they have to follow a schedule will motivate them to get themselves ready in the morning, leave in time to wait at the right bus stop, and get to their pickup stop promptly to return home.
One of the great things about our buses is that they’re almost always on time! Every morning, you know when the bus will be at the stop to pick up your child — and when it will drop them back off at home. That reliability can bring you peace of mind as a parent who’s trying to help your kiddo get from A to B safely and efficiently.
It can be difficult to manage your time when you pick up and drop off your kids on your own, especially if you’re a working parent, you have more than one child at more than one school, you’re having car trouble, or other reasons. Having your kids ride CityBus can take this task off your plate, make your mornings and afternoons less hectic, and even help you save money on gas!
It’s no secret that more vehicles sitting in the carpool lane will release more emissions and pollution into the atmosphere. On the other hand, when you choose to let your kids ride the bus to school, that’s one fewer car on the road, which means fewer harmful emissions like carbon monoxide. That’s especially true for our buses that have switched to compressed natural gas (CNG), a cleaner and lower-emission fuel.
And it’s never too early to teach your child how to take care of the environment! You can cut down on pollution as a family by taking the bus or biking whenever possible, as well as encouraging your kids to ride CityBus to school and events. When they see you making an effort to reduce your carbon footprint, they may be inspired to do the same.
To make sure our riders (especially your children) stay safe, we have drivers go through an intensive eight-week training course to receive their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). We also require all bus operators to be 21 and older with a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (no points against their regular license).
Your child’s CityBus driver will have undergone detailed background checks, as well as drug and alcohol testing, to hold this position. And these drivers receive specialized training on how to drive the bus, load and unload passengers, handle emergency situations, and more.
Whether it’s a ride to school or just for fun, CityBus can get your child where they need to go. And we’ve made it safe and easy to ride CityBus with our youth passes!
Tippecanoe County students in grades 5-12 are eligible for a youth pass, which gives your child unlimited access to all CityBus routes for the school year and following summer.
